Hi Rosa,

Terribly sorry for such a late reply to your comment! Those currencies are fine. Regarding the conditions of the notes you are right that they should not be torn or spoiled, we always explain this to travellers before their departure date to the DPRK. Serial numbers - we have never heard of this and have never had any customers have issues with the serial numbers of their bank notes.

It's also worthwhile pointing out that you should try to avoid taking in large denomination bills as they may struggle to find change for this (and you may received change in a variety of currencies).

Currencies for North Korea.

I have been informed to take US$, Euros Pounds Sterling and RMB in coins and notes must be straight off the press must not be bent or have nay nips in them and all in certain serial numbers.

I have been advised that there are three exchange rates: Airport, Official and Street Rate. What coinage and bills do you recommend taking? How does one find out what serail numbers are acceptable as I believe that there are similar problems like this in Burma.

Hi Al,

We recommend taking around 50 Euros per day. Not that you will necessary use it, but as there are not ATMs and cards cannot be used in North Korea, you'd be better off having more on you than less.

You mention taking cash to North Korea for any souvenirs, snacks and so on. How much would you recommend for say a 5 day trip?

As a tourist you can use Euros, Chinese Yuan and USD in North Korea but not the local currency.

Please bear in mind the following:

All your costs in the DPRK are included in our rates i.e. your accommodation, meals, transportation, guides, entrance fees etc. However, you will need to take cash for extra costs such as any evening drinks you may want, souvenirs (travellers tend to buy more than what they anticipated given that they are pretty unique), the Mass Games (these start from 80 Euros), extra activities such as going up the Juche Tower (5 Euros)

- You will not be able to use your credit card or ATMs in North Korea, so you will have to take cash with you.

- If using Euros, USD please avoid taking large bills as it may be hard to find change for this. Sometimes you may be given change in several currencies if your bills are too large.
